MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (AP) — A Metra commuter train heading into Chicago collided with a semitrailer, killing the truck’s driver and causing a minor derailment.
Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonett says the train’s passengers were evacuated after the collision in Mount Prospect on Friday. The collision also started a fire under one of the cars, but all of the train’s cars remained upright.
Pardonett confirms that the truck’s driver was killed. She says none of the passengers were seriously injured.
WFLD-TV reports that motorist Susan Bass witnessed the accident. Bass says the truck turned suddenly into the train’s path, despite no-crossing signs being down.
The collision ended with the cab of the truck separated from the rest of the vehicle.
