Hospice Nurse Saves Crash Victim With CPR

OZARK, Mo. – A hospice nurse from Springfield says she was thrilled to be able to help save a life after a car accident in southwest Missouri.

Debbie Rittershouse was on the way to visit her mother Monday when she saw that a vehicle had crashed into a rock bluff on U.S. 65 in Ozark. Rittershouse stopped to help Ozark police officers already at the scene. They pulled 52-year-old Debbie Deweese of Kissee Mills out of the vehicle. She had no pulse and wasn’t breathing.

Rittershouse performed CPR until Deweese began breathing. Then she left, without telling anyone her name. Her identity was revealed Wednesday when a friend called The Springfield News-Leader.

Deweese and her 12-year-old granddaughter suffered broken bones and other injuries but are expected to recover.
