Patient Loses Hand in Fireworks Explosion

PRINCETON, Ind. — A 21-year-old man is recovering after he lost a hand and suffered other injuries in an explosion at a southern Indiana fireworks store.

Investigators from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the Sgt. Pepper’s Fireworks store in Princeton over the weekend investigating the cause of Friday’s explosion.

Owner Eric Smith tells WFIE-TV that he and Chris Schraner were making a new kind of firework when it backfired on them and exploded. Schraner’s wife, Kimberly Crecelius, says he also lost two fingers on his left hand and had debris damage his intestine and liver. Smith was less seriously injured.

ATF Special Agent Kim Riddell tells the Evansville Courier & Press the store was properly licensed.
