1 Hurt, 10 at Hospital after Erie-area Plant Spill

NORTH EAST, Pa. – A worker has been hurt and 10 other were being checked out at a hospital after a chemical spill at an electrical products plant near Erie.

The spill happened Thursday about 6:30 a.m. at Electrical Materials Co. in North East, a borough about 10 miles northeast of Erie.

Fire Chief Dave Meehl says the spill happened in the plant’s plating room and that one worker was splashed with the chemical, which has not been identified. Ten others were taken to Hamot Medical Center in Erie for evaluation because the chief says they were exposed to a vapor cloud caused by the spill.

The company did not immediately return a call for comment Thursday.

The injuries aren’t believed to be life-threatening.
