UK EMS Crews Angry Over Lack of Stab Vests

AMBULANCE workers have said their lives are being put at risk after bosses decided to stop kitting out front-line crews working in Essex with stab vests.

The East of England Ambulance Trust, which has been giving Essex workers the protective gear since 2006, has said it will stop issuing stab vests.

The decision comes despite recent figures showing the number of assaults on ambulance staff in the region nearly doubled last year – from 11 in 2007-8, to 24 in 2008-9.

There were 95 assualts in total in the East of England region in 2008-9.

However, bosses at the Trust say staff are only at a low to medium risk of getting stabbed, and have other training and safety measures in place to keep them safe, and therefore don t need the vests.
