Tallahassee Fire Department and EMS Merger Improves Services

The Tallahassee Fire Department is hiring new firefighters/emergency-medical technicians to improve fire and emergency response in rural Leon County – and citizens are paying for the enhanced service.

The Fire Department and the county s Emergency Medical Services functionally consolidated Oct. 1 as part of a new fire-services agreement that put to rest years of bickering between the city and county over how much the local governments should be paying for fire protection.

Under the new agreement, 18 new firefighters are being hired to staff five fire stations outside city limits. The additional manpower, which is being phased in over coming months, will boost staffing at the stations from two to three firefighter/emergency-medical technicians and get TFD closer to national staffing standards.
