Illinois Paramedic Becomes Fire Department Chief

PEKIN, Ill. – For the first time in the history of the Pekin Fire Department, a paramedic will command the troops.

Upon the departure of Pekin Fire Chief Chuck Lauss for a position with Global Fire & Rescue on Sept. 18, current Deputy Chief Kurt Nelson will become chief.

Nelson has an extensive background in emergency services. He began his career with an emergency services company in Phoenix, Ariz. When a local fire department bought out the company, Nelson embraced the life of a firefighter.

He later moved on to the Pleasantview Fire Department in the Chicago suburbs, where he spent five years as a paramedic.
