FDNY Honors Five-Year Old Boy

NEW YORK – New York City fire officials have honored a 5-year-old who dialed 911 after his pregnant mother passed out at their home.

Tahlique Garay of Queens was sworn in Wednesday as a “junior paramedic.” His mother, Jennifer Garay, recovered quickly after treatment for dehydration. She’s due to give birth to her second child next month.

The little boy gave the 911 dispatcher his address and details about what had happened.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta says he’s learned in his profession — and as a father and grandfather — that “children often surprise us.”

Scoppetta wants every child in the city to know how to call 911 in an emergency
