SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — An autopsy shows that a search-and-rescue volunteer thought killed when he was hit by an ambulance was already dead from crashing his all-terrain vehicle at Oceano Dunes.
The autopsy results released Wednesday showed the 24-year-old Christopher Meadows died instantly of blunt force trauma when his ATV flipped over as he crested a dune while leading the ambulance to the scene of a first-aid call Sunday at the popular tourist spot on the San Luis Obispo County coast.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Maki says Meadows was one of 47 trained local volunteers who help sheriff’s investigators in search-and-rescue operations.
The two men in the ambulance were not hurt.
