One of the victims in Thursday night’s commuter plane crash near Buffalo, N.Y., previously worked in Yuma as a dispatcher and pilot for the Sun Western Flyers air ambulance operation.

Joe Zuffoletto, 28, was an off-duty crewmember aboard Continental Connection Flight 3407, which went down in a light snow during a flight from Newark, N.J. All 49 people aboard the flight and one person on the ground were killed when the turboprop crashed into a home.

Zuffoletto worked for Sun Western Flyers for a year or two before leaving in 2005 to become a pilot for Continental Connection, also known as Colgan Air, said Russ Baker, a former Yuman who worked with him at Sun Western.

“He was a very gregarious, outgoing, high-energy guy” as well as competent pilot, said Baker, who is a Federal Express pilot in Alaska.
