Greenfield Woman Delivers Own Baby

GREENFIELD, Pa. — A Greenfield woman gave birth to a son by herself on Saturday — while her father was on the phone relaying instructions from a 911 operator.

“It was really a surprise,” said Kelly Kincaid, 28, of Monteiro Street, who gave birth to Joshua Kincaid-Hackel about 1:30 p.m. yesterday.

“All of a sudden, I had this enormous discomfort. It was real easy; he came right out with two or three pushes,” Kincaid said last night from her hospital bed at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC in Oakland.

Both mom and son are healthy, she said. Joshua weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and is 19 inches tall. Kincaid also has a 17-month-old son.

Kincaid said she wasn’t due until Feb. 25.

“I wasn’t really prepared because he wasn’t due for a month,” she said. “I was scared. I don’t know how I did it, but he was coming, and I didn’t have much choice.”

Her father was on the phone with 911 in another room, she said.

Kincaid said she tied off the baby’s umbilical cord with a shoelace. She said the 911 operator stayed on the phone until paramedics arrived and instructed her on how to smack the baby and rub his back to get him breathing. The 911 operator also instructed her how to clean the baby up.

“If he would have waited another month, he would have been huge,” Kincaid said.
