Suspect Fakes Chest Pain, Leaps from Ambulance

MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa man arrested on suspicion of shoplifting escaped police custody Monday by faking chest pains and fleeing the ambulance he was riding in, police said.

Douglas C. Wenz escaped near Dobson Road and Southern Avenue in Mesa after becoming combative with two Emergency Medical Technicians, police said. Officers found Wenz hiding under a truck in a neighborhood several blocks away.

According to a police report, Wenz was in the process of being booked into Mesa Jail on suspicion of theft and fraudulent schemes when he began complaining of chest pains and requested to be taken to the hospital. While being transported, Wenz rippeed out his IV, removed his restraints and struggle with the EMT in the back of the ambulance.
