Illegal Immigrants’ Cell Phone Calls for Help Jump

TUCSON, Ariz. — Border Patrol paramedics are seeing “a tremendous increase” in 911 calls made from illegal immigrants’ cell phones seeking assistance this year.

Paramedic Mario Agundez says there’s been at least a 200% increase in the number of cell phone-generated calls this fiscal year over last.

He said it seems like more groups of illegal immigrants are aware of being able to call for help.

In just three days during the first week in June, for instance, Agundez said agents in the Tucson sector received 10 such calls, 9 of which resulted in rescues.

In some instances technology built into cell phones helps agents pinpoint the caller’s location.
