Lightning Strikes Expectant Parents, Sparks Birth

An expectant Albuquerque couple was watching fireworks outside a friend's home on July 4 when lightning struck both of them two weeks before the mother's due date.

Firefighters, already nearby at another call, arrived within minutes to find the couple dazed and confused. The couple were rushed to the hospital where the mother had an emergency c-section of an apparently healthy daughter.

A University of New Mexico Hospital EMS doctor who treated the couple told KRQE that there have been 11 recorded incidents of pregnant women being struck by lightning and only about half of those babies survived.

The Albuquerque Fire Department honored the 15 first responders who were at the scene for their efforts in saving the three lives.
