Directions for using JEMS Jeopardy and Double Jeopardy in Your Classroom
Those of you who read January’s Hands On section in JEMS have been eagerly anticipating our promised free download of a basic classroom Jeopardy game-board PowerPoint, designed to enhance your EMS education and training classes. This program uses a series of “Hyperlinks” ( A Hyperlink is colored or underlined text, or a graphic, that you click to go to a file, a location in a file, an HTML page or the World Wide Web [from Microsoft’s HELP MENU]) to connect the Main Game Board with the individual questions. This allows you to click on the dollar amount of the question and the slide with that question will appear. A second click on the question, or pressing the HOME key, will return you to the Main Game Board. For more information on Hyperlinks, click on HELP, MICROSOFT POWERPOINT HELP and enter “Hyperlink” in the search box. Here are the directions for use:
1. Decide what titles you want for the five topics. ( Example: Topics for a BLS review game: Scene Safety, Splinting, Bandaging, CPR, and Obstructed Airway.)
2. Write out the five answers and questions for each topic (document sources to limit arguments). Remember; use harder answers for higher dollar amounts. Also, remember the format of the TV game show. The contestants are given the “answer” and must supply the “question”. (“What is …”)
3. Open the Jeopardy or Double Jeopardy PowerPoint Presentation.
4. To help keep the questions organized, print the first slide (Main Game Board)
a. Select FILE, PRINT, and specify SLIDE “1” in the PRINT RANGE panel.
5. On slide 1 (Main Game Board), click on each topic so the edit box (with eight white circles around it) appears. Then enter your text in place of what’s there. Be sure to keep the wording to two lines, or the text panels will resize.
6. If the Outline Pane is not visible on the left side of the screen, select VIEW and NORMAL to restore Outline Pane.
7. Using your written answers and printed Slide 1 (Main Game Board) as your guide for answer placement, select the text for question 100a on the OUTLINE PANE, and type in your wording. Be sure to keep it simple.
8. Continue this for the remaining slides. Be sure to save your work frequently. Use FILE, SAVE AS to maintain this file as a template.
9. You may add graphics and pictures to the slides along with your answer. To do this, you will first need to delete the current hyperlink. The Hyperlink area of the question slides are sized to cover the entire slide. When you click on the slide, you will see 8 white dots around the edge of the slide with a yellow diamond above the top left dot and a green circle above the top middle dot. (Press DELETE and the hyperlink will be removed.) Now delete the text box. Highlight the text of the question and press DELETE. Insert the desired photo. (Select INSERT, PICTURE, CLIP ART or FROM FILE.) Find the desired photo on your hard drive and click INSERT. Resize the photo/clip art as desired. Right click on the photo and select HYPERLINK at the bottom of the pop-up menu. On the left column, select LINK TO: PLACE IN THIS DOCUMENT and highlight SLIDE 1, then click OK to hyperlink it back to the game board. You can also add text on the slide where you placed the photo. Just click on the small TEXT BOX icon on the bottom of the screen, then click and drag where you want your text. You can resize the box by dragging and pulling on a corner dot, and highlight the text to change fonts, font sizes and colors.
10. When finished entering answers, be sure and save the file again.
11. Running the game.
a. Open the file for your game.
b. Select SLIDE SHOW, VIEW SHOW (or press F5).
c. This will bring up Slide 1 (Main Game Board).
d. Determine which contestant will go first and have them select a category and amount.
e. Click on that amount and that answer will be brought up via a hyperlink.
f. After the answer is read and question given, click anywhere on the screen or hit the HOME key to return to Slide 1 (Main Game Board).
g. You will notice that the amount you just clicked on is now dimmed so players will know which questions have been asked.
h. There is one Daily Double in Jeopardy and two in Double Jeopardy. These are already linked to a question and back to Slide 1 (Main Game Board). To change the Daily Double location periodically so it’s located elsewhere for the next game, choose which question you’d like for the new Daily Double, RIGHT CLICK on the question slide and select EDIT HYPERLINK. Under MOUSE CLICK, select HYPERLINK TO:, use the pull-down menu and select SLIDE…, then select DAILY DOUBLE from bottom of the pop-up menu. You must then be sure to edit the hyperlink for the previous Daily Double to hyperlink back to Slide 1 and no longer to the Daily Double.
i. Continue this process until time expires (you can establish the game time), or all answers have been questioned.
j. Use a white board and a human calculator to keep track of each players/teams score. Be sure and deduct points for missed questions if you want added realism.
k. There is NO Final Jeopardy Topic or Answer in this presentation. If you are using Final Jeopardy, be sure to select a topic and write an answer and question.
