(AP) SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. - Officials say narrow, winding mansion driveways are causing a safety hazard in New York's Hamptons.
Proposed regulations would ensure driveways are wide enough to get ambulances and fire trucks through. Narrow gates and low-hanging trees also would be regulated.
Westhampton Beach Fire Chief Stephen Smith says such problems can cause thousands of dollars in damage to a fire truck. It also can be difficult to back up or turn around a rescue vehicle.
Southampton Councilwoman Sally Pope said residents like the rural look that narrow driveways provide.
The change would affect new construction. Existing driveways and gates wouldn't require changes unless the owner renovates and needs a building permit.
A public hearing is scheduled Tuesday night.
