Santa Barbara County (Calif.) firefighters and paramedics, assisted by AMR ambulance personnel and the California Highway Patrol, prepare to move the last of three victims extricated from their car to a waiting medical helicopter. Firefighters worked for just under two hours to extricate three members of a family after the car they were riding in was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer on Highway 101 just south of Buellton and dragged under the trailer to a resting position hanging off of a bridge. The big-rig dropped off the bridge and exploded 100 feet below, killing the driver. The mother was freed from the vehicle after her two young children were extricated from the wreckage. A military convoy delayed by the highway incident offered the rescue crews a heavy-duty fork lift that played a key role in the stabilization of the car hanging precariously off the bridge./Photo Keith Cullom
