PHOENIX (AP) — Police say a man who stole an ambulance early Sunday morning outside a house fire in west Phoenix was arrested after he got into multiple collisions.
Police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said 28-year-old Travis Ward took the ambulance that was left running to keep it cool for any people who might need medical care. The ambulance was unlocked, and its keys were in the ignition.
Ward was caught a few blocks away, but not before the ambulance had struck a post, a fence and parked cars, Thompson said.
Thompson said no injuries were reported and that he wasn't aware that anyone at the house fire scene needed an ambulance.
Ward told police he had used marijuana before the incident, Thompson said.
There was no residential phone listing for Ward in metro Phoenix. It's not known whether Ward has a lawyer.
He was booked on suspicion of theft and criminal damage.
