WUSA9 CENTREVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- A charter bus carrying students has been involved in a crash the intersection of MD Route 213 and Whitemarsh Road in Queen Anne's County.
Kent County Public Schools officials say 2 buses carrying about 47 people were headed on a school sponsored trip to the National Zoo when one of the buses flipped on its side trying to avoid a collision with Volkswagen SUV.
Students, parents and guidance counselors were on board.
Dexter Lockamy with Kent County Public Schools says the two buses were from Worton Elementary School. Lockamy says the front bus driver was trying to avoid a car which had pulled in front but went off the road, into a ditch, then fell on its side and hit telephone poles.
Seven of the 17 people rushed to the hospital are children, according to Queen Anne County emergency officials.
Four people were taken to Queen Anne's Co Emergency Room; seven people were taken to Chester River Regional Hospital; two people were taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center; three people were taken to Shore Health Systems in Easton and one person was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to officials.
The second bus headed back to the school with the uninjured children.
