SHELTON, Conn. -- The Shelton, Conn., Police Department is looking to get the "411" on city residents who have special medical needs.
"We are trying to develop a database of persons living within the city limits who have a medical condition or handicap," police Capt. Michael Madden said.
Madden said that the department is looking for descriptive information, including photos, names, address and contact information about people with physical or mental limitations, such as dementia, Alzheimer's disease, hearing or speech impairments.
Jason Perillo, chief of Echo Hose Ambulance, applauded the project.
"Any information we can have before we get to the scene of an emergency helps us," Perillo said, "whether it's info that someone's on oxygen or about a specific handicap. It's all helpful."
Madden said that at the scene of a medical emergency, people are sometimes unable to communicate vital information to those who are responding.
Information entered into the department's database will trigger special information alerts when the address in entered into the dispatch system for a call for service.
The data will also be entered into the state's Enhanced 9-1-1 system, and will be displayed on the E-911 screen when 911 is called from a residence.
