American Medical Response, which provides ambulance service along the Coast, will now also be running day-to-day functions of Hancock County's (Miss.) 911 emergency call service.

The E-911 Commission will pay AMR $189,500 under a three-year agreement. Hancock County supervisors signed off on the arrangement Wednesday. The 911 system has been struggling financially and is still waiting on interlocal agreements to be approved that will solidify funding agreements between Bay St. Louis, the county and Waveland.

Trent Favre, the 911 Commission's attorney, said AMR will be paid $61,000 for its first year of managing the system and its staff. Payment increases to $63,300 the second year, and to $65,200 the final year of the contract.

"We really need this management," Favre said.

The two cities and the county each operated their own 911 emergency systems prior to Hurricane Katrina. After the storm, the three merged and have since been hashing out payment arrangements. AMR official Rick Fayard said his company is ready to assume management of the 911 system, but still is waiting for agreements to be signed by all parties.

"We have a tentative startup date of April 1," he said. "But until these interlocal agreements get signed, we can't move forward."
