What’s Happening on the Inside?

We’ve all learned to ventilate patients on many different types of airway heads and manikins. We learn proper hand placement, mask seal, advanced airway techniques, ventilation rates, tidal volume when using a bag-valve mask, etc. These things are all important, but how do you know if you’re properly ventilating the patient? The RespiTrainer (Advanced) from IngMar Medical is an airway trainer that gives you multi-skill ventilation and airway training with graphic feedback on actual delivery rates, tidal volume and peak pressure. Each manual breath delivered can be analyzed and broken down into an exportable breath-by-breath spreadsheet. The manikin also features an anatomically correct head and realistic chest rise for visual feedback.

Where’s the Bleed?

The Infrascanner 2000 from MedLogic LLC takes advantage of the light-absorbing properties of hemoglobin by using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to identify a patient who may have an intracranial bleed. This portable, handheld scanner compares the left and right sides of the brain in four different areas of the head: frontal, parietal, temporal and occipital. The light to and from the laser and detector are optically coupled to the patient’s head through two disposable light guides. The brain’s absorption of the light will be symmetrical when comparing left and right sides in an uninjured brain. If there’s extravascular blood, the greater concentration of hemoglobin will absorb the light, causing less light to return to the device on the side where blood is present. This information shows the user the area where the extravascular blood may be present. This rule in device could be used to identify whether a head injury patient needs immediate transport to a facility capable of performing neurosurgical interventions.

Cool as a Cucumber

The PortiCool 2 System from Shafer Enterprises LLC is a personal cooling product that can be worn directly on the skin or over a thin shirt and can even be worn under firefighting turnout gear. The PortiCool 2 cooling product is portable and requires no electricity. The unit screws directly into a portable CO2 tank (the type used for pneumatic nailing tools or playing paintball). The liquid CO2 cooling and low-pressure perforated ventilation lines are integrally sewn into cooling channels. It features a moisture-wicking fabric that allows for flexibility and comfort, and it’s the lightest untethered active cooling garment on the market.

CPR App

Those of us who teach CPR are dedicated to the idea that the more people we can educate, the better the chance of increasing cardiac arrest survival. One of the problems is that when people leave a CPR class, they tend to forget the information they’ve learned or they’re afraid they won’t be able to remember exactly how to perform the skills when the time comes. The Team Life CPR App from Team Life provides step-by-step instruction right from the rescuer’s smartphone. The information is presented in a quick, clear and easy-to-follow format that can be done in real time at the victim’s side. The app guides the rescuer through cycles of 30 compressions and two breathes with a continuous running clock in the upper right corner of the screen. There’s also information on using an AED and what to do if the victim begins to breathe on their own.
