Successful Airway Management Is Critical

Safety Zone

Rick Patrick | | Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Successful airway management is a critical task for any patient contact. Regardless of Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support, the provider must concentrate on assuring the need for certain airway management and correctly apply the proper techniques on the first attempt.

Proper education and training in basic and advanced airway procedures can greatly reduce the risks associated with airway management. This will enhance the care provided and potentially improve the overall outcome for the patient. Further risk reduction may be accomplished through practical guidelines. Emergency Service Organizations should establish protocols with standard operating procedures and guidelines addressing which skills should be provided and when those skills should be performed. Proper airway management training and education for all personnel is paramount.
