More than 500 EMTs and Paramedics congregated to watch the 2012 JEMS Games EMS Competition in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday March 2, 2012. The JEMS Games are produced as a special event at the EMS Today Conference & Expo with the goal to provide EMS professionals with a valuable combination of education and competitive rivalry.

As the founding sponsor, Laerdal Medical has been supporting this event for more than seven years. This year, Laerdal collaborated with JEMS to create an immersive educational experience that included the release of a “Discover Simulation” Toolkit. Participants returned home with a resource that provides a comprehensive approach towards teaching a clinical topic using a blended learning methodology. Providing EMS educators with a turn-key solution to integrating simulation into their existing training programs is the ultimate goal of this toolkit.

Learn More
What:
The Toolkit contains an article on asthma, pre and post-tests (including an item analysis worksheet to analyze overall performance of the exams), access to an asthma scenario programmed for a variety of Laerdal simulators and debriefing guide. Also included is an implementation guide for the Asthma curriculum that includes checklists and worksheets.

Why:
Well-designed Simulation training, when combined with debriefing and repetitive, deliberate practice, significantly improves individual and team performance. Yet, healthcare educators sometimes struggle integrating simulation training into their overall educational strategy. The Discover Simulation toolkit provides educators with a turn-key education system around a focused topic – the toolkit methodology may be applied to other topics as well.

Benefits:
Relevant - Learning objectives are mapped to the EMT and EMT-P National Standard Curricula
Efficient - Blended learning strategy supports deep understanding of the topic
Total Solution – Preparation time is minimized. Focus on teaching rather than instructional design
Support – Workshops, webinars and companion website provide support at every step of the process

How:
The Discover Simulation toolkit, companion website (laerdal.com/discoversimulation) and training events are provided compliments of Laerdal Medical. EMS personnel may learn how to integrate simulation into their training program by attending one of the scheduled Discover Simulation training sessions.

Option 1 is to attend a full-day workshop and follow up webinar. This option is designed for the experienced instructor that may be new to simulation. Emphasis is placed on the needs assessment process, use of pre-simulation knowledge resources, facilitation and debriefing of simulations. Participation in the full-day workshop and follow-up webinar are strongly recommended but not essential.

Option 2 is to participate in an introductory webinar event. This option is for the instructor that has experience facilitating simulations and is looking for a brief overview of the toolkit’s resources. Webinars introduce the toolkit contents and companion website – with additional discussion about implementation practices.
