The Denver Health and Hospital Authority Paramedic Division, the advanced life support (ALS) provider of emergency medical services (EMS) for the City and County of Denver, has selected predictive modeling and deployment software from the Optima Corporation for its 155-square mile service area with an estimated residential population of 600,000.

Optima live and predict software will aid DHHA in managing the EMS system on a real-time basis and measure the potential effects of factors such as population growth on demand for services.

Chris Callsen, Chief Operating Officer North America, Optima Corporation, says DHHA uses a complex dynamic deployment model to assign EMS resources. “The system has no fixed vehicle stations; ambulances move constantly among a range of post locations to provide better coverage to other parts of the area when calls for service occur. As a result, resource deployment, scheduling, and allocation data change constantly. This approach requires constant assessment and reassessment of personnel and vehicle availability, demands for service, locations of service requests, and the system’s ability to meet spikes in demand,” Callsen continues.

“To manage our dynamic deployment system effectively, our dispatchers need to consider the number and types of resources available, resource scheduling, positioning, inter-post movement, hospital turnaround and response time capabilities at any given moment- a challenge in real-time,” said James Robinson, EMS Operations Chief for the Denver Health Paramedic Division.

Optima’ solutions are currently deployed in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
