Lifeguards without borders (LWB) is a non-profit organization comprising lifeguards and healthcare professionals who are devoted to doing their part to lessen the global burden of drowning through domestic and international training, program development and research. Organized in 2006, LWB was founded by Justin Sempsrott, MD, and Andrew Schimdt, DO, MPH, after providing water safety and drowning education to various low- and middle-income countries. Approximately 97% of the world’s drowning deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
LWB has provided additional lifeguards for large scale events, such as Carnaval in Ecuador; donated whistles, buoys and rescue boards; executed lifeguard instructor training programs in Peru; taught many EMS, nursing and physician courses; and performed medical research on drowning. LWB partners with other international lifesaving and drowning prevention agencies to provide logistical, educational and resource support.
