Gold Standard of Care

From the April 2011 Issue | Friday, April 1, 2011

The three-member Sussex County (Del.) EMS crew, the 1st place finishers at the March 2011 JEMS Games Advanced Clinical Skills Competition at the EMS Today Conference & Exposition, assesses and treats six patients involved in a mass suicide attempt at a cult ritual. Their patients included a child who was given an antifreeze bottle, a cyanide overdose, a cult leader who consumed barbiturates and alcohol while the crew was on scene, a hydrogen sulfide gas suicide victim, and a patient with a crushed pelvis and other injuries that occurred when a door collapsed as several cult members fled the scene.

This article originally appeared in March 2011 JEMS as “The Gold Standard of Care.”
