EMS Manages Patient’s Airway in the Air

From the July 2010 Issue | Thursday, July 1, 2010

A Memorial Hermann Hospital Life Flight paramedic, right, maintains an intubated patient’s airway with a bag-valve mask while a flight nurse opens a vial. The patient, who was intoxicated, accidentally fell into a pool. Friends found him and performed CPR prior to arrival of a Channelview (Texas) EMS crew. The crew ventilated the patient via bag-valve mask and oxygen. Upon arrival, the flight paramedic successfully intubated and stabilized the patient, who was loaded onto the helicopter and transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The patient survived and was discharged one week after admission.
