NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — A construction worker has been injured while working underneath one of the state-operated bridges spanning the Hudson River in upstate New York.

The spokesman for the New York State Bridge Authority says the contract worker was hurt around 10 a.m. Thursday under the north span of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, 60 miles north of New York City.

He says it isn't known yet how the worker was injured. A crane and basket was used to lift him to the bridge deck, where he was evacuated in a helicopter.

The accident happened in a "containment system," a plastic-enclosed device used to prevent paint chips from falling into the river.

In May, two men working under the deck were saved by their safety harnesses after falling from the containment area.
