WILLIAMSON – A veteran West Virginia EMT was killed after the ambulance he was driving crashed into a home on Saturday morning.
Williamson News Daily reports that 35-year old STAT Ambulance EMT Chris Staggs apparently suffered a medical emergency while operating the ambulance he and partner Paramedic L.C. Blankenship were in. As they were approaching the parking lot of the Williamson STAT station, Blankenship felt the ambulance jerk suddenly.
Blankenship tried unsuccessfully to steer the ambulance as well as turn the ignition off, but not before the vehicle struck several structures, coming to rest in the rear entrance of a local business. Staggs was unresponsive during the incident but regained consciousness while in the emergency room of Williamson Memorial Hospital, where he later died. Blankenship was treated for minor injuries.
An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of Staggs’ death.
