EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - A Long Island emergency medical technician who was shot by a man he tried to help has gone home from the hospital.

Justin Angell of Bellmore was wheeled on a gurney through an honor column of EMTs and firefighters Thursday as he left Nassau University Medical Center.

Angell seemed overwhelmed by all the attention, but said he loves his work and is glad he's OK. He said the shooting could have happened anywhere.

The heavily armed suspect, who had crashed a pickup truck, was killed in a shootout with police on Tuesday night.

Police have said he appeared to be on his way to carry out a mass killing. He had a rifle strapped to his chest, extra ammunition under wristbands, and six other weapons.
