BOSTON -- The baby girl just couldn't wait.

A couple from Norwood were on their way to the hospital this afternoon when the mother went into labor, said Jennifer Mehigan, spokesperson for Boston EMS.

A training ambulance crew responded to the couples 9-1-1 call. When placing the mother in the ambulance, the crew noted she was about to give birth, and delivered baby Serene at 1:24 p.m. on Interstate 93 at Morrissey Boulevard, said Field Training Officer Miguel Diaz.

The rescue crew consisted of two recruits in the academy and one field training officer.

"They're not parents, so I'm sure they were really nervous and excited," Diaz said of the recruits. "They didn't show that they were nervous."

The baby was healthy and looking around the ambulance after the birth, Diaz said. He has assisted in about 11 deliveries over the years.

The family was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and both mother and child are doing well, Mehigan said. The parents names were not available.
