Tractor-Trailer Collides with 3 Tenn. Emergency Vehicles

Several emergency response personnel were responding to single-vehicle wreck when the crash happened

CLINTON, Tenn. -- The driver of a tractor-trailer that collided with three emergency response vehicles was cited for failure to exercise due care and having a logbook containing false information, a state Department of Safety spokeswoman said.

Sultan Thomas, 39, of Stone Mountain, Ga., was hauling watermelons Saturday morning when his northbound tractor-trailer sideswiped a Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad response truck and a Heiskell Volunteer Fire Department fire engine.

The Freightliner tractor-trailer then struck a Rural/Metro fire engine. The Rural/Metro fire engine, valued at about $350,000, received extensive damages.

Several emergency response personnel were within 15 feet of the collision, which occurred on Interstate 75 in Knox County, officials said.

The emergency vehicles were in the right northbound lane of I-75 with lights flashing, officials said.

Emergency crews had been responding to a single-vehicle wreck where a child was injured. The driver in that wreck, Justin Kinard, 36, of Decatur, Ga., was charged with drunken driving and vehicular assault.
