SUNY Cobleskill Paramedic Program Forges Partnership With Cooperstown Medical Transport to Create Local Jobs

| Thursday, November 29, 2012

Cobleskill, NY (Nov. 24, 2012)—Students in SUNY Cobleskill’s Paramedic program have a new incentive to excel.

Graduates of the program—which offers both a one-year certificate and a two-year associate degree—will be guaranteed a job as a paramedic with Cooperstown Medical Transport (CMT) following graduation provided they pass the New York State certification exam with an 85 percent or better score, according to a recently signed agreement. Paramedic majors will also have the opportunity to work part-time for Cooperstown Medical Transport as EMTs while enrolled at SUNY Cobleskill.

"I’m very excited to see our two organizations come together for the betterment of our communities," said Howard E. Huth III, Paramedic program director. "This is a partnership that will raise pre-hospital healthcare in the six-county region."

Huth said the agreement helps fulfill two goals for the program—increasing the level of pre-hospital healthcare in the area and keeping graduates in the community. The six counties that will most benefit, according to Huth, are Delaware, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Otsego and Schoharie.

According to its website, CMT started in 1980 as a single-ambulance operation. The company now provides 24-hour paramedic-level care in Chenango, Delaware and Otsego counties. The company has expanded to 14 ambulances and one ALS first-response vehicle. CMT also employs more than 100 people.

“Cobleskill's Paramedic program has been steadily growing over the past three years and the certificate option was just added this fall,” Huth said.

CMT needed EMTs and paramedics and approached Huth, who told them, "We have a tremendous opportunity to form a partnership that will benefit our students and our community.”

"Cooperstown Medical Transport is excited about the opportunity to partner with the SUNY Cobleskill Paramedic program to encourage graduates to practice paramedicine in the rural setting," said Margaret McGown, one of CMT's owners. "We believe this will be a mutually beneficial partnership for CMT's employees and SUNY Cobleskill's students."
