MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating allegations that a Berkeley County EMS employee took marijuana from the pants of an injured felony DUI suspect and tried to conceal it while caring for the woman at the scene of a car crash. Highway Patrol Cpl. Bob Beres said the allegations stem from a deadly accident Thursday night on Broughton Road.
Troopers received a report that the EMS employee, who has not been identified, was treating Shana Robinson, 33, of Moncks Corner when she discovered the marijuana and tried to conceal it. Beres said troopers recovered the drugs but declined to say who reported the allegations. The EMS employee has not been charged, Beres said.
Troopers charged Robinson with felony DUI after Candy Zoll, 47, of Moncks Corner died in a hospital emergency room from blunt force trauma injuries she sustained in the crash. Authorities say Robinson's 2005 BMW crossed the center line and struck Zoll's 2000 Saturn head-on. A passenger in Robinson's car, 23-year-old Brittany Hartley of Moncks Corner, also was injured.
The EMS employee is on paid vacation that was already scheduled, Berkeley County EMS Director Bob Mixter said. Mixter said they are doing an internal investigation as they wait on the Highway Patrol's determination.
