Rescuers Say Couch Saved S.C. Man Pinned by Car in Living Room

It cushioned him from the impact of the car

ANDERSON, S.C. -- An Anderson man, Macolm Heaton, is recovering after being pinned to his sofa Tuesday night by a car that smashed tail-first into his house.

The car, a Honda Accord, went through a brick wall and into Heaton's living room at his home on Rolling Green Road in Anderson.

Emergency workers freed Heaton and he walked out of the house with their assistance. He was placed in an ambulance and sent to AnMed Health Medical Center, where he was treated and released early Wednesday morning, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed.

The couch helped save the man's life, cushioning him from the impact of the car, rescuers said.

The woman who was driving the car also was taken to the hospital. Her name and condition were not available. The South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the accident but a spokesman was not able to say what, if any charges, the driver faces.

The accident happened about 11:30 p.m.

Anderson County Fire Chief Billy Gibson said the woman backed a Honda Accord out of a driveway across the street.

A passenger was reported to have been in the car but it was not clear whether that person was injured.

Broadway firefighters, members of the Anderson County Technical Rescue Team and MedShore ambulance workers responded.

Independent Mail correspondent David Rogers contributed to this story.
