BEL AIR, Md. - A Republican candidate for county executive in Harford County has died after the SUV he was driving hit a utility pole in Bel Air.
The Harford County Sheriff's Office says 50-year-old Stephen Wright of Churchville was driving a Jeep Cherokee on Wheel Road at a normal speed when the SUV went off the road and hit a utility pole around 7 p.m. Thursday.
The sheriff's office says Wright was pronounced dead at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. The airbags deployed, but the sheriff's office says there's no indication that Wright was wearing a seatbelt.
County Republican committee Chair Kim Wagner says Wright had been on the committee for five years. She says he worked hard for the party and was passionate about conservative causes. Wagner says Wright was married with three daughters.
