A paramedic injured while responding to a fatal East Pittsburgh accident on Friday is doing well, East Pittsburgh police Chief Lori Payne said on Saturday.

"It ended up not being as serious as we thought (on Friday) night," she said.

The paramedic, who has not been identified, was injured when his Priority One EMS ambulance rolled forward across his legs. Payne said she did not know the exact nature of his injuries.

"It wasn't in gear, and it just began to roll," Payne said.

The ambulance clipped a Braddock police officer before a North Braddock officer jumped inside and stopped the vehicle, she said.

The North Braddock officer was not taken to the hospital, Payne said.

Priority One spokesman Gavin O'Neill said the driver is in stable condition, but did not specify his injuries. O'Neill said the driver saw a patient in critical need, got out and realized the vehicle was moving. He fell trying to get back inside and was struck by the rear wheels.

The officers and paramedic were responding to a four-vehicle crash in which witnesses said an 86-year-old driver crossed the center line on Route 30. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said the man died of blunt-force trauma to the head, neck and truck but declined to release his name on Saturday evening until his next of kin were notified.

A second driver, a woman from North Versailles, was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville. Payne said they have not released her identity and did not have an update on her condition.

The two other vehicles sustained minor damage, and no further injuries were reported, she said.
