Ohio Hospital Trains for Patient Move to New Facility

On Nov. 13, staff will be transporting about 200 patients from the East High Street campus to the new Springfield Regional Medical Center

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Less than 60 days before the official opening of Springfield Regional Medical Center, hospital staff and administration members did their first live run-through of the most complicated part of the move: transporting about 200 patients from the East High Street campus to the new downtown facility on Nov. 13.

More than 60 hospital staff leaders met Friday morning to discuss department roles in ensuring patients are moved safely from one hospital to another.

Ron Connovich, Community Mercy Health Partners vice president of facilities, played the patient as staff lifted him onto a stretcher in the East High Street facility, into a MedTrans ambulance, across town to the new downtown campus and into one of the patient rooms in the almost-complete hospital.

"From our perspective, from doing a lot of these, this has been very well-organized," said Ian Endacott of Health Care Relocations, the company CMHP contracted to handle the logistics of the move.

Throughout the process, staff stopped to ask questions about their roles and how to ensure patient safety.

Teams of nurses will transport patients every two to three minutes starting after 6 a.m. Nov. 13, when the emergency room of the old campus officially closes and ER services begin in the new campus, said Terry Boys, CMHP vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer.

Many different staff teams will be involved in the move, including nurses who will stay with each patient the entire time and teams that will lift each patient onto a stretcher and move the patient to an ambulance on East High Street, Boys said.
