Ohio Firefighter Charged in Fatal Ambulance Crash

Medical condition caused SUV driver to veer into ambulance’s path

| Monday, October 22, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio firefighter driving an ambulance involved in a fatal crash has been charged with driving without a license.

The Columbus Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/VcsG3E ) that a routine check of the man's driving record found that he had failed to take all the steps he needed to get his license reinstated after a 2011 drunken driving conviction.

Thirty-one-year-old Todd Picken has pleaded not guilty in Madison County municipal court to license charges. Ohio troopers say their preliminary investigation of the Sept. 18 crash doesn't indicate any fault on his part.

Instead, they say it appears that a medical condition caused SUV driver Marcia "Jody" Frederick to cross the center line and drive head-on into the ambulance. Police say the 53-year-old Columbus police detective had been battling cancer.
