New York Woman Dies after Car Plunges down Ravine

Vanaman’s car fell 200-feet into Finger Lakes ravine.

DUNDEE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 54-year-old cleaning woman has died after her car plunged down a 200-foot-deep Finger Lakes ravine near a home where she had just worked.

The Yates County Sheriff's Office says Rose Vanaman of Dundee had started her manual transmission car Thursday afternoon in the driveway of a home on a steep bluff overlooking Seneca Lake's eastern shore in Starkey.

Police say another person approached Vanaman to speak with her, and when she started to get out of the car, her foot slipped off the clutch, causing the vehicle to bolt forward. The car broke through a log barrier, went across a lawn and down the ravine.

Firefighters carried her out of the ravine. She was taken by helicopter to a Rochester hospital, where she died from her injuries.
