PHOENIX -- Jeffrey Urgelles thought his days as a paramedic ended three years ago when he left Miami-Dade Ambulance to take a job as the Marlins' bullpen catcher.
But before Monday's game, he helped umpire Jim Joyce revive an Arizona Diamondbacks employee who went into cardiac arrest outside the visitor's clubhouse at Chase Field.
Urgelles was in the batting cages about 90 minutes before the first pitch when he heard someone in the hallway call for help.
"I started walking outside and saw (Marlins pitcher) Ricky Nolasco scream at me, 'Urgy! Urgy! Some lady needs CPR!" Urgelles recalled before Tuesday's game.
He ran down the hall, where he saw Joyce performing CPR compressions on Jayne Powers, a game-day employee.
"I was able to coach him a little bit," Urgelles said. "I wasn't sure if he was trained for it or not. He stopped at one point because she had agonal breathing, kind of gasping for air. (Joyce) stopped, thinking she was coming back. I told him, 'No, continue with the compressions.' "
Soon, another employee arrived with an automated external defibrillator, followed by paramedics.
Urgelles said a Diamondbacks employee told him the woman "had emergency surgery (Monday night). They implanted a pacemaker in her and she's expected to make a full recovery."
Joyce, a longtime major-league ump, is best remembered for a botched call that prevented Detroit pitcher Armando Galarrage from completing a perfect game in 2010.
Prospects face off: Two top pitching prospects will make theirdebuts against each other today in the first game of a doubleheader at Chase Field. Right-hander Jacob Turner makes his debut for the Marlins against Arizona left-hander Tyler Skaggs, who makes his major-league debut, at 3:40 p.m. Marlins left-hander Wade LeBlanc faces Diamondbacks lefty Wade Miley in Game 2, beginning at 9:40 p.m.
Buck shining: Don't be fooled by John Buck's .198 batting average. He has been the Marlins' hottest hitter in August.
Buck entered Tuesday's game batting .347 in 14 games in August (17-for-49). He raised his average 10 points Monday by going 4-for-5 with a home run in Miami's 12-3 win.
His last four-hit game was Aug. 20, 2010, for Toronto at Boston. "All the way back to 2010? That's not good," he said with a laugh. "I'll try to make the next one with less time in between."
A key for Buck, a right-handed hitter, has been his effort to hit more balls to right field. "When they are pitching me away and throwing me off-speed stuff, it's important to go the other way and let the ball travel and not try to overswing and pull everything," Buck said.
