Driver under the influence crossed the center line, striking the ambulance

Police arrested a northern Kentucky man who crashed into an ambulance killing a patient.

Kentucky State Police told the Associated Press that 22-year-old Hunter LeGrand of Warsaw is charged with murder, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, criminal mischief and two counts of first-degree assault in the July 24 crash. He was lodged in the Carroll County Detention Center on Tuesday. Jail records didn't indicate whether he had an attorney.

Police said LeGrand was driving an SUV on U.S. 127 in Gallatin County, crossed the center line and hit an approaching ambulance, causing it to flip.

The patient in the ambulance, John Little, 59, of Dry Ridge, Ky., died and two emergency medical technicians were injured.

The driver of the ambulance, Justin Shields, 21, of Ghent, was taken to the University of Cincinnati Hospital by Gallatin County EMS following the accident. David Waltz, 25, of Carrollton, an EMT who was in the back of the ambulance with the patient was flown to the hospital following the crash.

State police said they suspected drug use, but waited on lab test results before charging LeGrand.
