MADISON - A Cedar Street man suffered a severed left arm and severe cuts to his right hand and head in a lawn tractor accident at his home Wednesday afternoon, according to police.
The man, Eugene St. Peter, said to be in his late 60s, was taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan where he was stabilized. He later taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Cpl. Joe Mitchell of the Madison Police Department said Thursday.
"The owner of the lawn mower somehow ended up on the ground and it appears that the lawn mower ran over him," Mitchell said. "It was a big Husqvarna lawn tractor. My understanding is that he is missing a good part of his left arm to just above his elbow and severe damage to his right hand and he's got some head injuries."
Mitchell said it was still unclear if the injuries are life threatening. St. Peter apparently lost a lot of blood in the accident, which was reported at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday.
"The ambulance people don't think they are (life threatening) but it's too early to tell because he wasn't in very good health to start with and it's a terrible shock to the body and the massive amount of blood loss. You get a situation like that and clots and aneurysms become a major concern."
A call to Eastern Maine Medical Center for St. Peter's condition was not immediately returned Thursday.
Mitchell said there were no witnesses to the accident, so the cause will not be known until police can speak with St. Peter.
