AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A Ford Explorer and an ambulance collided at an intersection where the traffic light was out Thursday, killing a passenger in the SUV.
Collins Green, 57, of Akron, was riding in the eastbound vehicle's rear seat without a seat belt when the SUV collided with the southbound ambulance near at the intersection Akron General Medical Center.
The SUV's driver and two other passengers sustained minor injuries. The ambulance crew members and patient weren't injured, police Lt. Rick Edwards said.
Edwards said the traffic light was out because of a power outage and, by law, that situation should be treated as a four-way stop.
The ambulance was transporting a patient on a non-emergency basis and didn't have its flashing lights or siren in use. It's unclear which vehicle entered the intersection first.
No citations have been issued, Edwards said.
Doug Moore, spokesman for American Medical Response, confirmed that one of its ambulances was involved in the crash and said AMR was cooperating with investigators.
Moore said late Thursday morning he had no information about who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
