Houston EMTs Deliver Baby After Icy Crash

Husband lost control and the car hung itself up on the guardrail.

TERRI LANGFORD, Houston Chronicle | | Friday, February 4, 2011

Houston  paramedics delivered a healthy baby boy this morning after they rescued his mom and dad after they slid on ice and crashed into a South 610 guardrail this morning.

The couple were en route to Ben Taub General Hospital for the baby's delivery when the husband lost control and the car hung itself up on the guardrail on the ramp into U.S. 288 at about 5 a.m.

Paramedics from Houston Fire Station 46 were called to the scene.

"His wife was in labor at the time and he was taking her into Ben Taub," said Firefighter/EMT Ryan Machacek, who was driving the ambulance.

After they loaded the couple into the ambulance, and started to make their way to the hospital, the ambulance went into a slide after exiting on MacGregor, Machacek said.

That's when Firefighter/EMT Joshua Rieves shouted to Machacek to stop the vehicle, because "the baby was coming."

By the time Machacek stopped and opened the back doors of the ambulance, the baby had arrived.

Mom, baby and dad are all fine and at Ben Taub, he said.

The name of the couple has not been released.
