Fatal Crash Shuts Down New Jersey Turnpike

Northbound lanes were closed for nearly eight hours.

CHESTERFIELD, N.J. - Officials say a 26-mile stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike in southern New Jersey will reopen at 9 a.m.

Northbound lanes were closed for nearly eight hours after a fatal crash involving a box truck, a dump truck and a tanker carrying 8,000 gallons of kerosene.

Turnpike Authority spokesman Joe Orlando says one of the three lanes will remain closed until workers repair guard rail and clean up the fuel that leaked from the tanker.

Orlando says officials believe the box truck rear-ended the tanker around 1:09 a.m. Friday in Chesterfield.

Orlando says the box truck driver was killed and the tanker driver was injured.

No names have been released.

Northbound lanes were closed between Interchanges 4 and 7A and traffic was diverted to Interstate 295 and Route 130.
