Durham (N.C.) EMS Director to Retire

Michael W. Smith began his career with EMS in 1975.

DURHAM, N.C. — Michael W. Smith, Durham County's Emergency Medical Service director, recently announced plans to retire effective June 30 after 37 years with the department.

Smith has led the department since August 2005.

Following active and reserve military service in the US Navy and US Army, Smith began his career with EMS in 1975 when he joined the Durham County Hospital Corporation's Emergency Medical Service. He became a Durham County Government employee in July 1998 following the merger of Duke University Medical Center and Durham County Hospital Corporation. All EMS employees were transitioned to Durham County Government as a new department.

Durham County officials will conduct a national search to name a successor for Smith. Deputy County Manager Lee Worsley, who is conducting the recruitment process, expects to identify a new EMS Director by June 1 to avoid naming an interim director.
