Paramedics Rescue Man from UK Apartment Fire

| Thursday, March 18, 2010

AN ELDERLY man had a lucky escape from a flat fire thanks to the brave actions of two ambulance crew.

Paramedic Martin Eales and emergency care assistant Bev Russell were called to Bird Grove Court, Foleshill, at 12noon yesterday. When they got there they found a warden outside the property, and thick smoke pouring out. The warden told them he had tried to rescue the elderly man, who was lying on the floor inside, but had suffered from smoke inhalation.

Martin and Bev grabbed a wheelchair by the door and despite the danger rushed inside to rescue the pensioner. Although suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation they managed to carry out emergency treatment and take the man to University Hospital, Walsgrave, by ambulance.

Martin said: "We could see the man inside the property but no actual flames, just thick smoke. "His only chance of survival was for us to go in and attempt to bring him out."

Divisional commander Paul Baker praised Martin and Bev for going above and beyond the call of duty to rescue the man, saying they were both a credit to their profession.
