WEST CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Want to spend a few hours Saturday watching a disaster unfold?

Communities in Schools and several other local organizations in West Charlotte, N.C., will sponsor a Health Care Career Expo, hoping to recruit a few would-be doctors, nurses or emergency responders among local students and adults.

The program will include the staging of mock medical emergencies.

The expo is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Freedom Regional Library, 1230 Alleghany St. The library shares a building with Phillip O. Berry Academy.

Communities in Schools, which sponsors programs to help prevent at-risk students from dropping out, is joining with Carolinas HealthCare System, the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County and Berry Academy as sponsors.

Berry Academy has a well-developed health care magnet program.

Organizers of the annual event have added a little excitement to this year's program.

They are setting up mock emergency scenarios, staged by local doctors, nurses and emergency medical responders. Visitors to the expo will be able to watch the scenarios unfold and learn the role that medical professionals play.

The expo also will have interactive exhibits, panel discussions, a financial aid seminar, and a chance to meet health care professionals and area college representatives.

A number of Charlotte-area colleges and universities have programs for medical professionals and emergency responders.

Want to go?

The Health Care Career Expo is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Freedom Regional Library, 1230 Alleghany St. There is no admission charge, and the program is open to the public. For details, call Mary Alice Katon of Communities in Schools, at 704-943-9443.
